Today, nationwide, we pause to honor our military veterans in all branches, past and present.
As a Naval officer who deployed to Afghanistan during operation enduring freedom, I wanted to share a special message today, on Veterans Day, to thank my fellow veterans across Wisconsin, and across the nation, for your service and sacrifice.
On this day, every year, I think back to how my journey started. I think about how for so many years growing up, I had never planned on joining the military. I never even thought of myself as coming from a military family – although I do come from a long line of veterans.
But just as I was finishing up my training as a physician – I felt something. I felt compelled to join. I felt called to bring the lifesaving skills I had learned to the battlefield to help save the lives of my fellow Americans who were putting everything they had on the line – in so many far-off places, for one simple reason: to protect and defend their country.
Serving my country, alongside some of the bravest, brightest, and most committed individuals I’ve ever met has truly shaped my life for the better. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve. Grateful for those served alongside me. And grateful for all those who served before me.
So, to all of my fellow Veterans, today and every day, thank you for your service.
Happy Veterans Day.
