Six years ago, Dr. Ehrenfeld was serving in Afghanistan when he asked then Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter about his stance on transgender individuals serving in the military during a town hall. His response set off a series of events that pushed equality forward.
While the ban on transgender troops serving in the military was lifted in 2016, it was reinstated in 2019. In January 2021, President Biden signed an executive order that lifted the ban.
